The COMAU 1GXL TWIN horizontal machining centre was manufactured by Comau S.p.A. in 2003 in Italy. The machine for machining the lower cylinder head consists of two machining centres arranged opposite each other. Each of the machine modules has a movable head for milling, drilling and honing and a series of supply installations such as: hydraulic installation, TRABON lubrication installation, air/oil lubrication installation, pneumatic installation and cooling installation. The whole is controlled by a SIEMENS Sinumerik 840D CNC control. The machine portal allows automatic loading and unloading of the workpiece to the milling machine. At the front of each module, there is a rotary table fitted with a device for clamping the workpiece during machining. The milling machine is equipped with a tool magazine with a capacity for 23 tools of 4 kg weight, 270 mm length and 170 mm diameter. The machine operates in three X/Y/Z axes with 630 mm travels. The machine spindle rotates at a speed of 16000 rpm and is equipped with an HSK 63 toolholder. The total weight of the COMAU 1GXL TWIN machining centre is 29200 kg.

Rotary table of the COMAU 1GXL TWIN milling machine
The rotary table on which the tool table is fixed is located at the front of the module; the TWIN configuration has two rotary tables, one for each module, mounted side by side on the same case. Its rotation forms the B axis of the machining centre. The table is driven by a Brushless motor through the kinematic movement of a screw – gear wheel and is held by a large-dimensioned transverse-longitudinal bearing. Angle reading is performed by a rotary encoder, located inside the rotary table. The rotary table is fitted with a hydraulic brake consisting of a chamber which, after receiving hydraulic oil, applies pressure to a brake disc which is connected to the workpiece retaining plate. On the rotary table the machining jig plate is mounted, where there is a device with 6 channels, connected to a DEUBLIN manifold that supplies the energy factors necessary for the operation of the machining jig and for locking/unlocking the rotary table brake.
