The COMAU 1GXL horizontal machining center, manufactured in Italy in 2003, processes the bottom head of cylinders. The milling machine is equipped with a SIEMENS Sinumerik 840D numerical control and a two-position pallet changing unit. The two-position pallet changing unit, mounted at the front of the casing, allows the workpiece to be loaded and unloaded on an external pallet during machining.
The machining centre magazine holds 23 tools which can be 170 mm in diameter, 270 mm in length and 4 kg in weight. The machine spindle, rotating at a maximum speed of 16000 rpm, has an installed HSK 63 taper. The machining centre operates in three axes (X,Y,Z) with maximum feeds of 630 mm (in each axis). The COMAU 1GXL milling machine weighs 16700 kg.

Two-position pallet changing on the milling machine
The two-position pallet changing unit is mounted on the front of the rotary table casing. This device raises (75 mm. pitch) the forks and rotates them through 180° taking the pallet from the loading/unloading station and placing it on the machining station, and vice versa. The correct positioning of the pallet before rotation of the forks is pneumatically controlled; in case of a fault, the rotation cycle stops.
The pallet changing device has cams and is controlled by a three-phase asynchronous self-braking motor. Its movement is controlled by mechanical microswitches on the side. During set-up and maintenance operations, the device can be moved by means of a key, after manual release of the brake.
