The COMAU 1GXL TWIN horizontal machining centre was manufactured in 2003 by Comau S.p.A. in Italy. The purpose of the machine is the machining of the bottom head of cylinders. The TWIN version of the machine consists of two machining centres facing each other. Each machining centre has 3 axes controlled by a SIEMENS Sinumerik 840D CNC control unit and a movable head mounted on the case for milling, drilling and honing. At the front of each module there is a rotary table fitted with a device for clamping the workpieces during machining. Both rotary tables are mounted on the same central case. Each module is provided with a series of supply installations such as: hydraulic installation, TRABON lubrication installation, air/oil lubrication installation, pneumatic installation and cooling installation. The machining centre has a tool magazine capable of holding 23 tools of diameter 170 mm, length 270 mm and weight 4 kg. The machine spindle rotates at a speed of 16000 rpm and is equipped with an HSK 63 tool holder. The COMAU 1GXL TWIN machining centre weighs 29200 kg.

Electro-spindle of COMAU 1GXL TWIN machine
The electro-spindle with horizontal axis is attached to the headstock which moves vertically along the column housing whose movement forms the Y axis of the machining centre. The headstock has been designed in such a way as to obtain considerable dynamic rigidity during machining. The electro-spindle has a system of automatic blocking and unblocking of the tool in the taper. On the flange of the spindle head there are connectors for the output of the power systems which supply the spindle. The electro-spindle is equipped with a cooling system, with a cooling capacity of 2800 W. The bearings are lubricated by air/oil coming from a suitable control unit, installed on the main hydraulic panel of the machine.
