COMAU 1GXL TWIN horizontal machining centre

The COMAU 1GXL TWIN horizontal machining centre was built by the Italian company Comau S.p.A. in 2003. The machine is used to machine the bottom head of cylinders. The TWIN module consists of two machining centres facing each other with 3 numerically controlled axes. The installed portal allows automatic loading and unloading of the machine. Each machining centre has a movable head mounted on a case which is used for milling, drilling or honing.

The spindle head is located in the horizontal axis, in which the electro-spindle rotating at 16000 rpm is fixed. It is equipped with an automatic tool locking/unlocking system and the tools are picked up/loaded from a rotary tool magazine with a capacity for 23 tools. Each tool can have a maximum weight of 4 kg, length 270 mm and diameter 170 mm.

At the front of each module of the COMAU 1GXL TWIN milling machine there is a rotary table fitted with a device for clamping the workpiece during machining. Both rotary tables are mounted on one central housing. Each module is equipped with a series of supply installations such as: hydraulic installation, TRABON lubrication installation, air-oil lubrication installation, pneumatic installation and cooling installation. The movement of the rotary table forms the B axis of the machining centre.

The milling centre has a SIEMENS Sinumerik 840D numerical control, allowing operation in X/Y/Z axes with maximum feeds of 630 mm each. The total weight of the milling machine is 29200 kg.
