The horizontal milling centre COMAU 1GXL TWIN was built by the Italian company Comau S.p.A. in 2001. The machine, consisting of two modules, is used for machining the lower cylinder head. The modules are arranged in front of each other, each equipped with a rotary table and a movable head.
The rotary table is mounted at the front of the module and it has a device for clamping the workpiece during machining. The movable head for milling, drilling and smoothing the workpiece is mounted on the module casing. The machining centre has an electro-spindle fixed to the headstock with an HSK 63 tool taper.
The spindle has a tool locking/unlocking system and rotates at 16000 rpm. The tool magazine of the COMAU 1GXL TWIN milling centre holds 23 tools, with a maximum length of 270 mm, weight 4 kg and diameter 170 mm. Each module of the machine is equipped with a number of installations, such as: hydraulic installation, lubrication TRABON, pneumatic installation and cooling installation.
The milling centre is controlled by a SIEMENS Sinumerik 840D CNC control. The maximum feeds in the X/Y/Z axes are 630 mm, while the accelerated feeds are 10 m/sec2. The total weight of the machining centre is 29200 kg.
