The horizontal milling centre COMAU 1GXL TWIN was built in 2003 by the Italian company Comau S.p.A. Equipped with a SIEMENS Sinumerik 840D CNC control, the machining centre consists of two modules and is designed for machining the bottom head of cylinders. These modules are arranged facing each other, each with a rotary table and a movable head.
The rotary table with the workpiece clamping device for machining is fitted at the front of the module. The movable head for milling, drilling and smoothing the workpiece is located on the casing. The electro-spindle with HSK 63 tool taper is fixed to the headstock. The machine spindle rotates at 16000 rpm.
The automatic tool blocking/unblocking system picks up and puts down the tools from the rotary magazine which holds 23 tools. Each tool in the magazine can have a maximum weight of 4 kg, diameter 170 mm and length 270 mm. The COMAU 1GXL TWIN machine operates in three axes (X,Y,Z) with feeds of 630 mm (for each axis). The accelerated feeds are 10m/sec2. The total weight of the machining centre is 29200 kg.
