COMAU 1GXL horizontal machining center was built in 2001 by the Italian company Comau S.p.A. The machine is controlled by the SIEMENS Sinumerik 840D CNC controller and is designed to process the lower cylinder head. The machining center has a two-position pallet exchange unit, which allows for loading and unloading the detail on an external pallet during processing. The machine spindle rotates at a speed of 16,000 rpm and has a HSK 63 tool cone. The tool magazine is able to store 23 tools with a diameter of 170 mm, a length of 270 mm and a weight of 4 kg. The feeds in the X / Y / Z axes are 630 mm. The total weight of the 1GXL machining center is 16700 kg.

Rotary table of the COMAU 1GXL machine
The rotary table on which the pallet board is mounted is at the front of the module. Its rotation forms the B axis of the machining centre. The table is driven by a Brushless motor through the kinematic movement of the screw on a longitudinal-transverse bearing. Angle reading is performed by an encoder located inside the rotary table. The table is fitted with a hydraulic brake consisting of a chamber which, after receiving hydraulic oil, generates pressure on a brake disc which is connected to the pallet plate. A pallet plate is mounted on the rotary table, which has connections for power factors for locking and unlocking the pallet clamping jaws, air for cleaning and checking the opening of the jaws and for locking the table. There are four base pins on the pallet clamping plate, which determine the exact position of the pallets. The pallets are secured to the plate by four hydraulic jaws which, when closed, lock the four links connected to the pallets. A pneumatic system controls the release of the jaws and maintains a slight overpressure in the rotary table, thus preventing the ingress of chips, dust and coolant; it also controls the position of the pallets on the table and keeps the base pins clean.
