The horizontal milling centre COMAU 1GXL TWIN was built in 2003 by the Italian company Comau S.p.A. The machine consists of two machining centres for machining the lower cylinder head, arranged opposite each other. The milling machines are equipped with a series of power supply installations and a movable head used for milling, hole drilling and honing, all controlled by a SIEMENS Sinumerik 840D CNC control. The loading and unloading of the workpiece is carried out automatically by means of a portal. The rotary table is mounted on a central case and has a device for clamping the workpiece during machining. The tool magazine holds 23 tools with 270 mm length, 170 mm diameter and 4 kg weight. Feeds in the X/Y/Z axes are 630 mm and accelerated feeds are 10m/sec2 . The machining centre spindle operates at a speed of 16,000 rpm and has an HSK 63 toolholder. The COMAU 1GXL TWIN machine weights 29200 kg.

Tool magazine for COMAU 1GXL TWIN machining centre
The tool magazine consists of a rotary disc with 23 toolholders. It is installed on the top left of the module. The tool change procedure is automatic and is controlled by the control unit, while loading and unloading of the tools in the magazine is performed manually by the operator using a special tool. A total of 23 lever jaws for HSK 63 tools according to DIN 69893 are fitted on the rotary disc of the magazine. The magazine disc is vertical and is actuated by a Brushless motor, located at the rear of the magazine and directly connected to the reducer. A micro proximity switch signals to the control unit the presence of the tool in the jaws in the loading position. The spindle head deposits the tool mounted in the magazine head in the correct position and retrieves a new tool from the magazine. Before depositing the tool in the magazine, the spindle head goes through a tool integrity check. The tool integrity check instrument has a micro proximity switch, actuated by a pneumatic cylinder, located near the tool to be checked.
